Christmas colour schemes for 2021

14 December 2021

If you’re more excited than usual for Christmas this year, we’re with you! Families and loved ones will be together again, so there’s no better excuse to decorate your home from top to bottom. Our interior design experts at Mila Maven have outlined everything you need to know about the must-have Christmas colour schemes for 2021 – along with some of our favourite Christmas style ideas. Let’s jump in!

Sticking with the classics

When you think of Christmas, classic shades of red, green, and gold immediately spring to mind. However, this year, one theme that we can really get on board with is earthy and muted green tones accompanied by neutrals, to celebrate our appreciation of nature over the past couple of years. People are now shopping more consciously with a sense of longing for the outdoors, think artisanal decoration, tableware and wreaths sourced from sustainable materials.

Rich blues and festive golds

Another colour scheme we’re really excited about this year is rich blues and golds. Blue is a cool and contemporary colour which perfectly envisions the feelings of a winter wonderland, beautifully complimented by glistening golds which bring a joyful warmth and sense of glamour to the scene.

If this sounds like the colour scheme you want for Christmas this year, we have the perfect furnishings to make your home feel even cosier. Our Blue Velvet Cushion will fit in beautifully with a blue and gold Christmas theme, and set upon a neutral sofa, this cushion will work all year round.

Keeping it natural (and neutral)

Natural neutrals are set to be big this year too. Neutral decorations can still stand out on their own, and this style can have an elegant appeal that makes them so appealing and enticing to look at. Using the natural colour of your Christmas tree as a reference point is a creative way to decorate for Christmas with a neutral concept. Green is a fantastic hue in and of itself that helps to bring the festive spirit to life, and it’s also a good motif to combine with warmer colours like beige tints.

There are a variety of ways to do this, including spreading the green with garland to give the area an outdoorsy air that complements the season. Another good way to break up the colouring is to add some beige beads or tan decorations to the tree.

If you don’t have a light-coloured sofa, you can always find some complimenting throws to supplement it, our Wool Throw in Light Grey is exactly what you need to drape over the sofa to complete the neutral cosy theme! Consider purchasing pillows with a variety of patterns so that each one stands out.

Those of you who have a coffee table can use it to develop your motif. You can buy a variety of neutral Christmas candles to create additional ambience in the room, like our Oud & Jasmine scented candle, a rich fragrance to suit all seasons, but more luxurious than the classic Christmas scents.

What about Christmas table decorations?

When you’re thinking about Christmas colour schemes, you’ll want to think about your table decor too!

To create a good foundation, start with a new tablecloth, then lay a runner or a wreath right through the middle. Add some sparkle with twinkling lights or candlesticks, or nestle a few decorations such as baubles around the wreath or garlands. This is a wonderful opportunity to continue the colour scheme you have chosen, blue and gold glistening baubles would look simply stunning on a dark blue tablecloth if that’s the inspiration you’ve gone for. Of course, this is just an example, you could adorn your table piece with pine cones, Christmas tree ferns and even walnuts for a neutral and natural theme.

After that, it’s time for plating. Begin with placemats, followed by a charger, which are the bigger ornamental plates that sit beneath your ordinary plates. Even if you’re using plain white tableware, this will add some colour and texture to the table and give it a festive look. However, if you’re feeling vibrant, there are lots of festive and colourful dishes to choose from. Make the most of your silverware – if you have a gold set that you only use for special occasions, now is the moment to show it off. Finish with a napkin that matches your tablecloth, place cards for each family member, and crackers, and you’re ready to serve dinner!
